ABOUT US

Welcome To Common, a neighborhood pub housed in the heart of Midtown Detroit on Wayne State University’s campus. A community-oriented space with good food, libations, and passionate staff, we provide a diverse and welcoming atmosphere that offers ample seating in the pub, bar, and outdoor patio. We also have a community room for private groups that seats 50 comfortably.

Built in 1926 as the Belcrest Hotel, our space was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1983 and was listed on the National Register of Historic places in 1984. It is significant as an early example of the apartment hotel development concept in Detroit, and a major early work of architect Charles N. Agree.

GILBERT KNIE,

Chef

I graduated from Schoolcraft College in 2013 and decided I had to push myself to really see what I was capable of. I accepted a position at the White Elephant Hotel on Nantucket that summer and dove headfirst into the world of restaurants and hotels. As my contract was ending, I found myself wanting to work in restaurants more than hotels. So I packed up and headed to New York City (yes I’m that kinda crazy). The next 5 years were a blur of fire, yelling, and beautiful plates of food. I was lucky enough to work in some amazing restaurants: Lincoln Restaurante, Casa Apicii, Upland, and Leonelli Taberna. And to work for some amazing chefs: Jonathan Benno, Justin Smillie, and Adam Nadel. After 6 years, I felt it was time to return home to begin the next phase of my career. I joined the Detroit Athletic Club in 2021 and worked my way up to the position of Sous Chef. I left the DAC to join the team at Common Pub in order to begin building my own reputation and to start cooking the food I love, pub food.
